Your Daily VA: What's my expertise?

Admittedly, during my maiden journey with freelancing, the only idea I had was to use my skill in phone handling and was clueless about which skill set to use; when, how & where to start. When a client asks, I'd say "Yea, I can do that!" Or "Yea, I have an idea." Yes, I am able to learn." Sadly, it was the naive response that made people clueless what they can get from me, because I wasn't clear which to offer. This was because I blindly jumped in the bandwagon, without doing proper research before coming up with this brilliant idea. Then again, experience is the best teacher.

From this experience, I learned that identifying what I am really good at (language & cultural exchange and office management) and capable of doing not only gives me the confidence to sell my skills & services, it also establishes my integrity in the business. What I did was, I enrolled myself to a technical course for MS Office and picked myself up from there.

How to identify which skills to profit from? Skills are developed primarily through interest on an activity. It was not until I was given a high rating in one of my school project that I presented in type written form. Which impressed my subject teacher that I started practicing proper keystrokes to finish my work faster and better, which I eventually attained proficiency. Another example was when I started to develop my sewing skills, during which, the adults in the family would pull out our pedal powered Singer sewing machine and produce clothing, pillow cases, and alter clothing if it's one size big or smaller. Witnessing them do these things, motivated me to learn the craft of constructing things by sewing & other crafting methods.

Organizational or leadership skills.

Linguistic skills
Manual skills
Information Technology I am sure that everyone have at least one of each of these skills. You just have to find out which you are very good at.
What have you achieved so far: Are you still in school? Working in an office?
What or which skills have you developed as a result: Research? Article contributor for the school paper? Phone etiquette?
What of these activities do you enjoy doing?

Listing what you enjoy the most, opposite to how you can apply them, should help determine your skill or expertise, and figure out how you can improve it for career advantage. You'll just have to be creative.
